Got Questions?

GETTING STARTED

Absolutely. Most of our members had zero martial arts experience when they started. We specialize in helping complete beginners – our programs are designed to fast-track your progress without feeling lost or overwhelmed. You’ll learn step-by-step in a supportive environment with coaches who actually care about your development.

No. Jiu jitsu will get you in shape. Waiting until you’re “ready” just delays your progress. We train people of all fitness levels – you’ll build strength, cardio, and flexibility as you train. Start where you are, not where you think you should be.

Your first class will be a free trial. You’ll meet your coach, get a tour of the gym, and join a beginner-friendly class. We’ll cover warm-ups, basic movements, fundamental techniques, and controlled partner drilling. No sparring on day one unless you want to. Just come see if it’s the right fit – zero pressure.

No. Your first class is controlled, supervised, and beginner-paced. You won’t be thrown into live sparring. We prioritize safety, proper technique, and gradual progression. Jiu jitsu is one of the safest martial arts when taught properly – and we take that seriously.

Just comfortable workout clothes – t-shirt and shorts or leggings. No zippers, buttons, or pockets (they catch fingers and toes).

Just yourself, a water bottle. thongs/slides/crocs (if your trendy) and an open mind. If you have a mouthguard, bring it (recommended but not required for your trial).

Everyone feels nervous walking into a new gym – it’s completely normal. But here’s the truth: everyone on the mats was a beginner once. Our culture is supportive, not intimidating. You won’t be judged, mocked, or left to figure it out alone. You’ll be welcomed, guided, and encouraged every step of the way.

You’re welcome to watch, but we’d encourage you to jump in for the trial. Jiu jitsu makes way more sense when you’re doing it rather than watching from the sidelines. That said, if you’re really nervous, come by during a class and we’ll show you around.

TRAINING & CLASSES

Gi jiu jitsu is trained in the traditional kimono (uniform) with grips on the collar and sleeves. It’s slower-paced, more technical, and emphasizes control and strategy. No-gi is trained in rashguards and shorts – faster, more dynamic, and similar to MMA-style grappling and more likely real world. Both are valuable, and we teach both. Many members train in both styles.

Either works; we offer more Nogi classes as we are more of a Nogi gym than a traditional gym.

Kids classes: 40-50 minutes, depending on age group. Adult classes: 60 minutes. Classes include warm-ups, technique instruction, drilling, constraints-led approach (CLA), and live training (sparring).

  1. Warm-up (5 min): Movement drills, solo drills, stretching
  2. Constraints Lead Learning (30 min): CLA is a teaching method where the coach designs the training environment to naturally guide you toward the right solutions. Instead of just showing you a technique and making you copy it 100 times, we create scenarios where you have to solve problems and discover.
  3. Positional sparring (10 min): Practice the technique in controlled scenarios
  4. Live training/rolling (15 min): Free sparring with different partners (optional for beginners)
  5. Cool down: Stretching, Q&A, announcements

No. Sparring is optional, especially for beginners. Many people spend their first few weeks (or months) just drilling and doing positional training. When you’re ready to roll, you will – and we’ll pair you with safe, experienced partners who’ll help you learn.

That’s completely fine. You can drill, watch, or do extra technique work while others spar. There’s no pressure. When you’re ready, you’ll know—and we’ll be there to guide you through it.

Yes. Coaches actively manage pairings, especially for beginners. We match people by size, experience, and intensity level. You won’t be thrown to the wolves – you’ll be paired with partners who’ll help you learn safely.

We prioritize creating a respectful, safe environment for everyone. Women train alongside men in our classes, and we have a zero-tolerance policy for inappropriate behavior. You’ll be welcomed, respected, and given the same quality coaching as everyone else.

For beginners, 2-3 times per week is ideal. This gives you enough reps to progress without burning out. As you get more experienced, many people train 4-6 times per week. Listen to your body and build consistency first.

Yes, if you’re an unlimited member. But we’d recommend building up to that gradually. Your body needs time to adapt, especially in the beginning. Most experienced grapplers train 4-6 days per week with built-in rest days.

Life happens. Just jump back in when you’re ready. There’s no penalty for missing classes—you train at your own pace on your own schedule.

Yes. Open mat is unstructured training time where you can drill techniques, roll, ask questions, or work on specific positions. It’s a great way to get extra mat time and train with different partners. Friday is open mat day – mostly we just roll/spar for the full hour.

You can drop into any class that matches your level (beginner or all-levels). No need to register in advance unless it’s your first trial class. Just show up and train.

We’re open 6 days a week with classes in the morning, afternoon, and evening to fit around work and family schedules. Check our full timetable here: https://platinumbjj.au/schedule/

We close for approximately 10 days over the Christmas/New Year period and on major public holidays. Our pricing accounts for this closure. We’ll announce specific dates in advance. We are closed on all Public Holidays. Usually, we host an open mat on those days for adults.

PROGRESSION & BELTS

Jiu-Jitsu uses a colored belt ranking system:

  • Kids: White → Grey → Yellow → Orange → Green
  • Adults: White → Blue → Purple → Brown → Black

Belts are earned through technical proficiency, mat time, sparring performance, and demonstration of knowledge. We also use stripe promotions (small strips of tape on your belt) to mark progress between belts.

On average, 1-2 years of consistent training (3-4x per week). Some people get there faster, some take longer—it depends on your athleticism, how often you train, and how quickly you absorb technique. The journey matters more than the timeline and everyone has a different journey.

Yes, we honor legitimate belt ranks from other gyms. Just let us know your background, and we’ll assess your level. You’ll train at the rank you earned.

No. Once you earn a belt, it’s yours. Skill might get rusty if you take extended time off, but your rank doesn’t disappear. You’ll just need some time to shake off the rust when you come back.

No. Competition is optional. You can progress to a black belt without ever competing in a tournament. That said, competition does accelerate learning and test your skills under pressure – so we encourage it if you’re interested.

COMPETITION

Absolutely not. Competition is 100% optional. Many members train for fitness, self-defense, or just personal growth – and never compete. There’s zero pressure… but I believe you should test yourself at some point in your journey.

Yes. We offer competition-specific training, game planning, weight cut support, mental prep, and corner coaching on comp day. Just let us know your goals, and we’ll get you ready.

There are local, state, national, and international BJJ competitions run by organizations like IBJJF, ADCC, Grappling Industries, and more. We’ll guide you to the right competition based on your experience level and goals.

Completely normal. Every competitor feels nervous before their first match. But competition is one of the best ways to test yourself, grow rapidly, and build unshakable confidence. We’ll prepare you technically and mentally so you walk in ready.

Yes. There are kids’ divisions at most competitions. Competition is optional for kids too, but many love the challenge and thrive in that environment. We support families either way.

SAFETY, INJURIES & HEALTH

When taught properly with good coaching and a respectful culture, jiu jitsu is one of the safest combat sports. There’s no striking, and you can tap out (submit) anytime you feel uncomfortable. Injuries can happen in any physical activity, but we prioritize technique, control, and injury prevention.

Tapping is how you signal submission—either by tapping your partner, the mat, or verbally saying “tap.” It means “you got me” or “I’m uncomfortable, let go.” Tapping is not losing—it’s learning. Everyone taps. It’s a normal, essential part of training safely.

That would never happen here. Respecting the tap is non-negotiable. Anyone who ignores a tap is immediately removed from training. Your safety is our top priority.

Most likely, yes. Many people train successfully with old injuries by modifying techniques and communicating with training partners. Let your coach know about your injury so we can help you train safely and avoid aggravating it.

Minor bumps and bruises are normal in any contact sport. For anything more serious, we have first aid on-site and will help you get appropriate care. We also encourage you to communicate with your coach and training partners about any limitations so we can adjust training accordingly.

No. We have members across all age ranges. Jiu jitsu is a lifelong martial art—technique beats strength, so age is less of a barrier than you think. You’ll train at your own pace with partners who match your intensity level.

 We’re strict about hygiene:

  • Mats cleaned every session
  • Clean gi/gear required for every class
  • No shoes on the mats
  • Fingernails and toenails trimmed
  • Shower before class
  • Zero tolerance for poor hygiene

We take cleanliness seriously because it protects everyone’s health.

We address it immediately and privately. Hygiene is non-negotiable, and we have clear standards. If someone repeatedly violates hygiene rules, they’re asked to leave.

No. If you’re sick (cold, flu, covid, skin infection, etc.), stay home. Protect yourself and others. Come back when you’re healthy.

GEAR & UNIFORMS

A gi (also called a kimono) is the traditional jiu jitsu uniform—a jacket, pants, and belt. You’ll need one for GI classes. We sell GIS at the gym, or you can buy your own online.

Entry-level GIS costs around $150. Higher-quality GIS ranges from $200-400. We sell GIS at the gym for convenience.

Gis are sized by height and weight (e.g., A1, A2, A3). We’ll help you find the right size when you’re ready to purchase. Most gis shrink slightly in the wash, so factor that in.

Wash after every use in cold water. Hang dry (don’t use a dryer or it will shrink). Never leave a sweaty gi in your bag—bacteria and smell will build up fast.

Rashguard (tight-fitting athletic shirt) and shorts or spats (grappling tights). No zippers, pockets, or buttons. You can find no-gi gear online or at the gym.

Highly recommended, especially once you start sparring. Mouthguards protect your teeth and jaw. You can get a cheap boil-and-bite mouthguard from a sports store or invest in a custom-fitted one from a dentist.

 Optional but useful:

  • Knee pads/sleeves (if you have sensitive knees)
  • Athletic tape (for fingers/toes)
  • Gym bag for your gear
  • Flip-flops (for walking to/from the mats)
  •

Yes, as long as it’s clean and in good condition.

CULTURE & ENVIRONMENT

There is no mold. We train people from all backgrounds—tradies, teachers, engineers, stay-at-home parents, students, and retirees. If you show up and put in effort, you belong here.

Zero tolerance. Bullying, harassment, racism, sexism, homophobia, or any other discriminatory behavior results in immediate removal. We’re here to build people up, not tear them down.

Zero tolerance. Bullying, harassment, racism, sexism, homophobia, or any other discriminatory behavior results in immediate removal. We’re here to build people up, not tear them down.

We’re more than just a gym—we’re a community. We run social events, team dinners, grading celebrations, and occasional seminars with visiting black belts. Training is the foundation, but the friendships you build here last beyond the mats.

KIDS' PROGRAMS

Kids can start at age 5. We have age-specific programs:

  • Little Legends (5-7 years)
  • Champions (8-12 years)
  • Teens (13-17 years)

No—the opposite. Jiu-Jitsu teaches discipline, respect, and controlled aggression. Kids learn when to use their skills (self-defense, competition) and when not to (everyday life). It actually reduces aggression by giving kids an outlet and teaching emotional regulation.

We specialize in building confidence in shy kids. Our coaches create a safe, encouraging environment where kids feel supported—not pressured. Many of our most confident students started shy and nervous.

Yes. Jiu-Jitsu is excellent for kids with ADHD, autism, or sensory processing needs. The structure, repetition, and physical activity help with focus, regulation, and confidence. Let us know your child’s needs, and we’ll work with them individually.

Absolutely. Parents are welcome (and encouraged) to watch, especially in the beginning. Some kids focus better without parents watching after a few weeks, but it’s up to you.

No problem. The trial is risk-free. If it’s not the right fit, there’s no obligation to continue. That said, we encourage giving it 3-4 classes before deciding—many kids are nervous at first and warm up after a few sessions.

Yes. Jiu-Jitsu is one of the most effective martial arts for real-world self-defense, especially against bullies. Kids learn how to control an aggressor, escape bad positions, and defend themselves without striking. It’s empowering and practical.

Competition is optional. Some kids love it and thrive in competition. Others just train for fun and fitness. We support both paths equally.

SELF-DEFENSE & PRACTICAL APPLICATION

Yes. Most real fights end up on the ground, and jiu-jitsu teaches you how to control, submit, or escape from that position. Unlike striking arts, jiu-jitsu allows you to defend yourself without seriously injuring your attacker, which is important legally and ethically.

We teach takedowns and wrestling basics, but jiu-jitsu specializes in ground fighting. If you want a complete self-defense system, we recommend training both gi and no-gi, which covers most real-world scenarios.

Jiu-Jitsu is highly effective, especially for real-world self-defense and MMA. But “better” depends on your goals. Jiu-Jitsu excels in grappling, control, and submissions. If you want striking, add Muay Thai or boxing. The best martial art is the one you’ll actually train consistently.
